Fan failure can cause severe GPU heating and end with a fried GPU. You should take this seriously as it can destroy your graphics card without even telling you. Similarly, the new 30 series RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 can face fan failure issues.
The reasons behind the fans not spinning could be several and so the solutions are. One thing is sure you can not mitigate the heating of a GPU because it is mandatory for GPUs to get heated when used for gaming or video editing tasks. So what can you do? Well, every problem has a solution, so don’t worry.
If your RTX 3080 or RTX 3090 fan is not spinning, then these are the perfect solutions that can prevent them from overheating and restore the fan working.
Today, most graphics cards come with built-in fans and a heatsink system. The main purpose of fans is to maintain the temperature of the GPU between 70-80-degree Celsius and prevent it from going above it.
Going above 80-degree Celsius can be alarming for many GPUs including RTX 3080. I am using an Nvidia RTX 2060 which has a system to keep the fans off until it gets near 50-68 Degree celsius temperature. However, I prefer to keep my fan running at 50-55% all the time, because I care about my GPUs.
So let’s start the guide and let’s turn on the propellers!
Fix for Series 30 GPUs Fan Not Spinning
If GPU fans are not spinning at the beginning then it’s totally normal. However, when it starts to reach between 60 to 65 degrees Celsius, it should turn on automatically. If they are not spinning then check these settings.
Check the Temperature of the GPU
First of all, you need to check whether your GPU is getting hot. So for testing, you need to play some games or do anything that puts pressure on the GPU so that it gets heated, and then we can examine the fans.
To check the temperature, there are many tools on the market. However, if you do not know how to check the GPU temperature then there is an option in Windows 10.
Go to Taskbar> Right Click > Choose Task Manager > Click on Performance > GPU
Here you can see the temperature of the GPU that will guide you about if the temperature is rising or not. If you are seeing continuous temperature rising but fans are still freezing then it is a sign your fans have something wrong with them.
But keep in mind, most of the time, fans won’t start until GPU temperatures reach 60-65 celsius degrees.
Do a Little Bit Cleaning and Maintenance
Many times, dust and debris are the main reasons for fans to not spin. It is pretty normal that we often do not clean our CPU cabinets and forget to clean the dust from time to time. As a result, it builds up over time and causes many problems like this one.
To fix it, you need to open your CPU cabinet, take out the GPU and then clean all the dust you see around it or on it. You can use an air blower for this task or you can use a soft brush as well.
Once it is done, put your GPU back in its place and check if the issue is fixed or not. If not then there could be something more serious going on that we will discuss further.
Check The Fan Connection
The connection of fans should be connected properly. If there is a gap or loose cable connection then this can cause fan failure.
Most of the people make this mistake and as a result, they face problems like this one.
To check it, simply open your CPU cabinet and then locate your GPU. Once you locate it now you need to check the fan and see if it is properly plugged in or not.
If it is not then simply plug it back in and see if the issue is fixed or not.
Update Your Drivers
If you are using an outdated driver for your GPU then it could be the reason why your fans are not spinning. It is best practice to keep your drivers updated so you can avoid these issues.
There are two ways to update the drivers. One is the automatic method while the other one is manual. In the automatic method, you don’t need to do anything by yourself. All you have to do is install the Driver Easy software and let it find and install the required drivers.
While on the other side, you need to go to the website of Nvidia or AMD and find the GPU drivers and then install it manually on your PC.
Once your drivers are up to date, restart your computer and see if the issue is fixed or not.
Check The Fan Speed in BIOS
Another thing you need to check is the fan speed of your GPU in BIOS. Many times, it is set to a lower value which is why your fans are not spinning even when the temperature is high.
- Restart your PC
- Now press the F2 or Del key to enter BIOS
- Once you are in BIOS, locate the fan speed settings and then set it to 100%.
- Save the changes and restart your computer
Checking Fan Speed with Afterburner
If you are not using the BIOS method then there is another solution. You can use MSI Afterburner software that is made for controlling fan speed and other settings.
- The first step is to download the MSI Afterburner
- MSI has made it for Nvidia GPUs only but you can use it for any GPU don’t worry
- Install the software and open it
- Now you will see a dialogue that has many buttons and sliders
- Look for the fan speed slider and adjust the speed
- Set the speed at maximum it will force them to spin
Now you RTX 3080 fans should be started.
Technical Ways to Fix Fan Issues
If none of the above methods is working for you then you need to take some steps further. These are the technical methods that will surely solve your problem. However, you will need to be careful if you are doing it for the first time.
Oiling the GPU Fan Ball Bearings
One method to make your GPU fans spin again is to oil the fan ball bearings. It is pretty common for the ball bearings to get dry over time and as a result, they stop working.
- Open the cover of the graphics card and find the fans.
- Once you have found it, take a look at the ball bearings and see if they are dry.
- To reduce the dryness, you need to oil them
- You can use any type of oil for this purpose but make sure it is not too thick.
- Also, be careful not to over-oil the bearings as this can also cause problems.
Once you have applied the oil, reassemble your GPU and then power it on. Hopefully, the fans will start spinning again.
If you are still facing a fan spinning issue then it’s time to replace the fan altogether.
Replace the Fans
If oiling the fan ball bearings has not solved your problem then go for fan replacement. Replacing the fan is a bit technical so you may need a helping hand of a professional.
Before you buy new fans, make sure to check the size of the original fans.
- Once you have the new fans, simply remove the old ones and then install the new ones in their place.
- Now connect the new fans with graphics card chip and power supply
- After you have done that, reassemble your GPU and then turn it on.
The new fans should start spinning and hopefully, they will keep your GPU cool.
If you are still having problems with your GPU fans not spinning, then you may need to take it to a professional for repairs.
